Since Ferdinand Porsche built the first four wheel drive car about one hundred years ago, the automobiles bearing his name have gained a reputation as high-speed, paved and dirt road racers. These cars have raced all over the world, including the Paris to Dakhar Rally and the Pikes Peak challenge.
For the 2003 model year, the Porsche Cayenne (pronounced ki-ann, meaning "spice" in various languages) carries on the Porsche tradition and prepares to stake its claim in the crossover SUV market. This joy-yielding vehicle was designed alongside a much different Volkswagen SUV, the Colorado, which will be introduced for the 2003 model year as well. The two vehicles will share the same platform, but not much else.
Two powerful V-8 engines are to be offered in the Cayenne: a normally aspirated 340hp unit and a more powerful 450hp twin-turbo. Transmission choices have neither been decided upon or been made final, but expect to see a five-speed automatic (or semi-automatic like in the 911.) A five- or six-speed manual likely, since this is, afterall, a Porsche. The Cayenne will not stay true to crossover SUV form with a permanent four-wheel-drive system with electronic differential locks and low/high-range shifter.
And so, here it is. After more than two years of speculation, the Cayenne SUV is on its way. Its existence was rumored as soon as development began; The Car Addict's own five-sentence, September, 1999 story was merely speculation. Luckily, this speculation was correct. If you plan to be one of the Cayenne's projected 25,000 buyers in its first year, expect to lay down $60,000, excluding small change. Of course, in Porsche's case, small change usually totals more than $1000, excluding small change...
