Instead of doing the work themselves, Buick handed the car over to ASC/McLaren Specialty Products. McLaren added a special Garrett turbocharger, lightweight ceramic impeller, and a better intercooler. A modified computer chip and a low restriction exhuast rounded out the power upgrades. To handle the extra power the transmission was improved for better shifts and the torque converter was upgraded. On the exterior, the GNX got fender flares and side vents that helped cool the engine. The Grand National's wheels were upgraded to 16-inch alloys, and the tires were wider to help put the power down on the road. Lastly, GNX badges replaced the Grand National identification on the grill and trunk. Only 547 GNX's were ever made.
