German authorities are investigating 11 people, mostly current employees of Mercedes-Benz, over allegations of improper use of company money and 'breach of trust'. Sales managers for the firm have been accused of improper deals, according to weekly news magazine Focus, and a former head of sales for Germany is said to have used company money to fund the building of a holiday home for his girlfriend in Spain. German magazine Der Spiegel also reports that DaimlerChrysler is carrying out its own internal audits into whether those accused used DaimlerChrysler's own construction department for work on private buildings, and whether cars were sold at a discount in exchange for construction work.
The investigation is said to have been promoted by anonymous tip-offs. Two executives have already been fired, and DaimlerChrysler has confirmed that it is questioning further employees. Board member Dieter Zetsche is quoted as saying "some people were a little bit confused about what is theirs and what is the company's." (Detroit News/Detroit Free Press)
