GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. unveiled its coming model lineup to the media yesterday and outlined aggressive sales targets for this year and next.
Korea's third-largest automaker hopes to increase sales this year to about a million units after moving 900,084 vehicles last year. About 80 percent were sold overseas. It hopes to increase exports by 12 to 15 percent and domestic sales by as much as 14 percent. It expects to sell more than 1.2 million next year.
To achieve the goals, the automaker will release eight new and revamped models over the next 15 months. Preview models of the eight vehicles and a concept sport utility vehicle were unveiled to the media yesterday at GM Daewoo's Bupyeong design center in the port city of Incheon.
The new passenger car lineup includes the all-new Matiz, Korea's best-selling minicar, the Statesman, a luxury sedan sold in Australia by GM's affiliate Holden, and the company's first sport utility vehicle, code-named C-100, which will vie with Hyundai Motor Co.'s Tucson and Kia Motors Corp.'s Sportage.
"The models on display represent in part the result of a major product offensive that has been under way since GM Daewoo's formation two years ago," Nick Reilly, president and CEO of GM Daewoo, told reporters prior to a tour of the design center.
"They show the direction of our company over the next couple of years as well as the excellent progress that has been made in creating a broad range of new products in Korea that will meet the varying needs of local consumers."
The new Matiz has undergone a full revamp, adding a more dynamic touch to its cute design. The automaker has also made improvements to fuel efficiency, safety and environmental friendliness by complying with EURO 4 emission standards.
The new Matiz will hit showroom floors in March. So far, about 1.3 million Matiz cars have been sold worldwide.
The Statesman will also be introduced to the Korean market this spring, marking GM Daewoo's entry to the high-end segment. The sedan will come in two versions with engine displacements of 2,800cc and 3,600cc.
It will compete against Renault Samsung's SM7 which was released last month, and Hyundai's new XG which will debut in April. The car is priced in Australia at about 50 million won.
Major changes were made to the compact Kalos notchback and three-door hatchback, which will be released in the latter half of the year. The Kalos models were revamped to appear bigger and stronger with larger wheels and slicker lamps.
The Magnus, GM Daewoo's midsize sedan, will have a successor around the end of this year. The car, code-named V-250, will be reborn with a bolder, more prestigious image.
GM Daewoo's subcompact Lacetti will also come in two new models - a three-door hatchback and a small wagon
