By now, we’ve seen every variation of Ford’s Mustang that possibly could exist under the sun. Even so, Roush’s 427R (“Like a Teenager”, AW, September 25, 2006) makes us stand up and take notice. For 2008, the new 427R Trak Pak is race-tuned icing on a muscle-car cake.
Notably, the Trak Pak includes a new suspension package designed for track competition. Along with a front-shock tower brace, the package adds adjustable front and rear shocks, springs, stabilization bars and camber/caster plates. Eighteen-inch forged-alloy wheels are fitted with “high performance” tires of undisclosed specification.
The supercharged 4.6-liter V8 is unchanged from the base 427R, meaning it’s good for 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Roush claims the Trak Pak’s revised grille and radiator shields improve the cooling system, while vented six-piston front calipers with 14-inch slotted rotors help stop the car in a hurry.
Roush applies the base 427R’s front fascia and chin spoiler but also offers a new adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing. This, along with white gauges, carbon-fiber dash trim and window louvers, are the only options available on Roush’s new racehorse.
427R Trak Paks go on sale later this summer and are expected to sticker around $58,245. With Roush building only 100 examples, we hope most—if not all—make it to the track. Pitted against Saleen’s Parnelli Jones Mustang, it could make for a great Trans-Am revival.
