Finlands's Nokia has revealed five new handsets
Finlands's Nokia has revealed five new handsets, including new 3G phones and two cameraphones, set to reach markets later this year.

Finland's Nokia, known for releasing an average of nearly two new mobile handsets a month during a typical year, has introduced a collection of new handsets at the company's Nokia Connection 2006 conference in Singapore.

With one hand, Nokia is promising "3g for everyone" with new phones (including a new inexpensive 3G handset) while on the other hand Nokia's rolling improved cameras and Bluetooth connectivity typically found in high-end gadgets into new mid-range phones to satisfy consumer demand.

The traditionally-designed (and by this, Nokia means "candybar") Nokia 6151 GSM phone will support streaming also and video content (including support for over-the-air media services), offer a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity, built-in music player, microSD memory expansion, push-to-talk capability, and 30 MB of user memory. Priced at about €240, it should ship to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia the the third quarter of 2006.

The Nokia 6080 camera phone will be available in black, gold, and silver and sport an FM radio, combined camera and video recording capability, and ship with a stereo headset. The phone will also support an XHTML browser and EDGE data transfer for uploading video or images, and can be customized through wallpapers, themes, and even offers a Sodoku game. Price will be about €180 when it's available toward the end of the year: no word on target markets, but we think it's safe to assume the North American region isn't on the radar.

At the low end, the €45 Nokia 1110i 3G phone will be aimed at first-time mobile phone users, emphasizing affordability and reliability (because high-end phone users hate reliability!), and tried to ease the transition to mobile devices with friendly icons and large text display. The phone will include the Nokia Prepaid Tracker to help users monitor phone usage, and will include other cost-management features to help new or low-frequency users keep their bills under control.

In the middle of the pack, Nokia also took the wraps off two new CDMA handsets expected to hit markets in the fourth quarter of 2006: the 6275/6275i and the 2875/2875i. The Nokia 6275 will offer a 320 by 240 QVGA screen, a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity, built-in music player (supporting MP3, AAC, and eAAC+) and support for an option 2 GB memory card to keep a reasonable portion of your music library (or video surveillance, er, YouTube submissions) at hand. Also on board: an FM radio and streaming media support. No word on pricing.

The 2875 will sport an unspecified "consumer-friendly" price, alsong with a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, and a 160 by 128 pixel LCD display. The phone will also feature an FM radio, Internet and streaming media support—expect it toward the end of the year.

"More and more customers are recognizing and embracing the benefits of the newest mobile technologies, imaging and Bluetooth wireless technology being two of the most popular of these new features. These new mid-range phones are designed to both satisfy this demand, and to introduce consumers to other new features that will enhance their mobile experience," said Timo Ihamuotila, senior vice president of Nokia's CDMA business unit. "This new pair of Nokia phones brings exceptional design, technology and value to the CDMA marketplace."

One problem with Nokia announcing phones so far in advance—and with minimal pricing and market information—might be that consumers have little idea how to plan mobile phone purchases. Leading the market too strongly makes savvy consumers expect to be able to purchase features which are announced but not yet-available, and can make available handsets seem slightly pale in comparison. But Nokia is the largest phone maker on the planet; rolling out so many phones, so frequently, and announcing them so far ahead of time doesn't seem to be doing them any harm.
