OUR TAKE: What a wonderful car. Stunning looks, especially the front and rear views, and a ball to put through a workout. With this powertrain and inherent “Audiness,” it reminds us of the current S4, but there’s something about it that takes it up a notch. The chassis is incredibly rigid, the interior is stunning, and the cockpit features one of the best driving positions we’ve ever come across.
There’s a hint of R8 in the face, and this may be the first Audi to properly integrate that corporate-grille motif. We do wish it were some other color, however; we’re tiring of the various shades of gray/silver/black we keep seeing from Ingolstadt.
On the other hand, there’s something to be said for not alerting traffic enforcement that you’re in something this wickedly quick. It’s muscle-car strong, with 10 lb/hp, the demarcation point that insurance companies formerly used to apply the “muscle” surcharge.
That 10 lb/hp means the S5 pulls hard with a fantastic rumble from the V8. The brakes are great (much better pedal feel than the “soft” action in our long-term S6), the steering incredibly intuitive and the handling aggressive. Toss this car around like a rag doll, and it whimpers nary a protest. Oh, and the clutch/gearbox action is fantastic, perhaps Audi’s best setup other than in the R8.
If we have a beef, it’s that the steering isn’t as sporting as the rest of the car—it’s too light and feels on the numb side.
For roughly the same money, the S5 gives people a less high-strung and brutal experience than the BMW M3, yet one that still raises the pulse. Plus, there’s the all-wheel drive some find reassuring. This bad boy makes you wonder why we had to wait so long for a smartly styled Audi performance coupe.
