Sep 13, 2004 – At the Paris Motor Show Mercedes-Benz is presenting two concepts showing their vision for large and mid-sized future-oriented 'Sports Tourers'. The European version of the Grand Sports Tourer 'Vision R' , previously displayed at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show, is further refined with a more production-ready interior, and is joined by the new 'Vision B' Compact Sports Tourer. Mercedes-Benz is underlining the potential of this vehicle concept for a future model family, presumably a future 'R-class' and 'B-class'.
The Grand Sports Tourer 'Vision R', which Mercedes-Benz is presenting in its European version with a wheelbase of 2980mm, is designed as a 4+2-seater. The passengers have the benefit of comfortable, single seats and a level of spaciousness which exceeds that of many luxury saloons. Tasteful appointments with fine leather, ash-wood and aluminium trim contribute to the atmosphere in the spacious interior.
The Vision R features four-wheel drive, air suspension, 160-kW/218-hp V6 diesel engine, 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission, and consumes less than nine litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. The exhaust emissions meet the EU-4 standards, and the particulate filter system also reduces soot emissions.
To highlight the special nature of the Sports Tourer show cars, Mercedes-Benz is using a new type of exterior paint with a high-gloss metallic finish for the first time. This extremely high-luminance finish is the result of a newly developed process intended for series production.
