DaimlerChrysler said Thursday embattled chairman Juergen Schrempp will remain head of the automaker, but unexpectedly fired the just-named head of the Mercedes-Benz unit, former Chrysler chief operating officer Wolfgang Bernhard.
The dismissal of Bernhard, 43, who led Chrysler's cost-cutting and product revamp at Chrysler, was as much a shocker as Schrempp staying. Daimler officials confirmed that Schrempp and two other management board members offered to quit last week only to have their resignations rejected by the supervisory board. The resignations followed the management board's rejection of Schrempp's plan to capitalize Mitsubishi, in which Daimler owns 37 percent, with $3.8 billion. The supervisory board met Thursday in New York, though, and re-affirmed support for Schrempp. One company official who spoke on background said Bernhard, known for his hard-charging style at Chrysler, has alienated key staff, suppliers and the influential works council at Mercedes during the last two months he has been in Stuttgart working with outgoing Mercedes chief Juergen Hubbert easing into the job he was formally to take over next week.
