شوفو السوبربان دا SS موديل 1975 - 1976م

The Chevrolet SS Suburban was produced between 1975 and 1976 by the Special Truck Team (STT) of General Motors. The SS Suburban project originated because of a request from the Secret Service for a high performance large vehicle capable of outperforming many other vehicles of the period. While a stock Suburban with a 350 cubic engine produced approximately 210 horsepower and 265 pounds of torque, the SS Suburban contained a 632 cubic inch specially prepared engine capable of 789 horsepower and 820 pounds of torque. The SS was only offered with a manual transmission, 12 bolt rear locking differential, 3/4 ton suspension and heavy duty brakes. Although the SS was intended only for certain US government agencies, knowing dealers could enter the $4,589 SS option through the dealer factory ordering system until the factory discovered the programming error. With 789 horsepower and 5700 pound vehicle weight, the SS had a vehicle weight to horsepower ratio of 7.22 which is substantially better than the model year 2001 hotrod Z06 Chevrolet Corvette with a ratio of 7.70 weighing 3118 pounds and having 405 horsepower. And comparing the SS Suburban to the run-of-the-mill 2001 Corvette with a LS1 engine of 350 horsepower, vehicle weight of 3245 pounds and ratio of 9.27 LBS/HP, the 1975-76 SS Suburban was truly a remarkable beast - quite an improvement from the typical 27.14 pounds per horsepower for its less muscular kinship 1976 Suburban

Of course the SS Suburban also had a host of other non-Corvette features such as seating for 9 passengers, 40 gallon gas tank, ability to clear 14 inch obstacles, rock, skid and transmission plates, 4-wheel drive and dual air conditioning. In fact, all SS Suburbans were only available with 4-wheel drive because the torque of the engine was so immense that two tires were simply insufficient to harness power. The SS was capable of spinning all 4 tires on dry pavement though this was not recommended even with the specially built button clutch. The truck is so long, that GM fitted the car with dual air conditioner evaporator units. One in the normal front spot and a second unit suspended from the ceiling in the back the car

his SS Suburban remains very close to the original factory stock condition with the exception of an altered air cleaner, after-market stereo, snow plow and alarm system. The Suburban has been in the family since new. "No one really knows about these cars," says Dan, the current owner. "It’s performance is great as long as you are going in a straight line. During the winter, I use it to plow, and it can plow pretty fast. In the summer, we can pack in the kids, tents and head out camping. I am a firm believer in using your car instead of turning it into a Trailer Queen". When asked about typical fuel efficiency, Dan responded, "Well, it has a 40 gallon tank."

This seemingly stock suburban shows few clues of its awesome capabilities. And, yes, it can plow.

The 632 engine was specially built by Bill Mitchell who has since become a major supplier to all 3 major US auto companies. Bill Mitchell takes a different approach to most high performance engine builders in that he doesn't just build an engine, but starts by casting his own blocks. Bill decided long ago during his drag racing years that he wanted to build a better engine than was available from the factory. Things that caused problems such as thin cylinder walls, wimpy crankshaft supports and such are completely corrected by his version.

Bill Jamestown, manager of GM STT, once remarked that he wondered if they misheard the directive to improve the 1976 normal truck. "I thought they said to ‘exponentially improve performance’ but it may have been ‘incrementally improve performance’. You have to remember that this was in the mid 70's, during the height of disco and a lot of wild things were happening then. I decided to just go ahead a create the SS. When we showed it to the government evaluators they were quite pleased with the result. A lot of people think that the SS meant Super Sport but it really stood for Secret Service." Fortunately, even though by 1976 emissions had long strangled passenger car performance, the Suburban was classified as a light truck. The 4 wheel drive 3/4 ton versions was just heavy enough to squeak by the emission regulation cutoff point for cars. Even today, most high ranking government officials are still shuttled around by outwardly looking stock Suburbans.

The SS Suburban is quite a remarkable beast - the equivalent of a professional football linebacker patrolling the streets in unassuming disguise.
